Organize the Moving Parts

Build a decision map before adding another strategy.

We begin by identifying what is owned, where it sits, who advises on it, which decisions depend on one another, and what deadlines matter. That map becomes the working agenda for the advisory relationship.

Accounts

Overlapping investments and tax treatment

Taxable, retirement, and trust accounts may hold similar exposures while serving different cash-flow, tax, and estate purposes.

Concentration

One position carries several consequences

A concentrated stock position can affect taxes, liquidity, household risk, charitable planning, and the timing of other decisions.

Cash Flow

Business and real estate support the household

Operating income, distributions, debt, capital commitments, and property decisions need to be understood alongside household spending.

Change

A sale, inheritance, or liquidity event

The first questions are often about taxes, cash reserves, investment pacing, family priorities, and the professionals who need to be involved.

Giving

Charitable intent meets account selection and timing

Investment, tax, estate, and family considerations can all affect how a gift is structured and when action may be appropriate.

T

CPA or tax advisor

Tax return preparation, tax opinions, and final tax advice.

L

Attorney

Legal advice, estate documents, trusts, entities, contracts, and document interpretation.

Y

You and your family

Goals, priorities, approvals, family decisions, and the information the professional team needs.

Fortress does not replace your CPA or attorney. We help keep the financial work connected to the same facts, priorities, and deadlines.

A lead advisor, backed by the full 11-person Fortress team.

Your lead advisor remains accountable for the relationship while planning, investment, service, and operations work is coordinated across the Fortress team. When outside expertise is required, we work with your existing professionals or help identify the type of professional the decision calls for.

Practical Questions

Clear scope for every professional at the table.

What does working with Fortress cost?

Fortress is fee-only. Our advisory fee is a percentage of the assets we manage, ranging from 0.45% to 1.25% per year depending on the size and complexity of the household. There are no commissions, no product sales, and no hourly surprises. Your exact fee is quoted in writing before you decide to engage, and the full schedule is in our Form ADV, linked in the footer of every page.

Why an asset-based fee instead of a flat fee?

Because the work is ongoing, not transactional. One fee covers planning, investment management, coordination with your CPA and attorney, and the service between meetings, and it scales with the responsibility we take on rather than with how often you call. It also keeps the relationship simple: no meters running, no invoices for questions. If a flat or hourly arrangement suits your situation better, we will tell you before you engage.

Who does Fortress typically work with?

More than 330 households, from families approaching retirement to substantially larger and more complex balance sheets: business interests, trusts, concentrated positions, and multi-entity structures. Larger households are staffed with our most senior advisors, including CIMA® and CPWA® credentials built for this work, with the full team behind them. If we are not the right fit, we will say so on the first call.

Is Fortress a family office?

No. Fortress is a registered investment advisor, not a family office under the SEC family-office exclusion. We provide investment advisory and financial-planning services and coordinate with outside professionals. We do not provide tax or legal advice.

Will you work with my current CPA and attorney?

Yes. With your authorization, we can share relevant planning information, organize open decisions, and coordinate implementation questions with your existing professionals.

How do you approach a concentrated stock position?

We evaluate the position in the context of taxes, liquidity, household risk, time horizon, restrictions, and the role it plays in the broader plan. Any recommendation depends on the specific facts and may involve several alternatives rather than a single transaction.

Do you use separately managed accounts or private investments?

Separately managed accounts may be considered when their structure, costs, tax characteristics, and investment role fit the household. Other investment types are evaluated individually; availability alone is not a reason to use them.

Can you coordinate a business sale or inheritance?

Yes. Sale structure and installment timing, concentrated proceeds, entity wind-down, charitable gifts in the sale year, and the household plan the proceeds must fund. We coordinate the financial side with your CPA, attorney, and the deal’s other professionals. The most valuable exit planning happens two to three years before a letter of intent, not after one is signed.
